COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain that are custom made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.
Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile. They can often be alternatives to crowns and the ideal solution in treating many dental conditions.
As with most dental restorations, veneers are not permanent and may someday need replacement. But of all the other restorations ,they are most durable and long lasting
Preparation.
To prepare a tooth for a veneer dentist will remove about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, which is an amount nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface.
- Before trimming off the enamel, you and your dentist will decide the need for a local anesthetic to numb the area. Next, dentist will make a model or impression of your tooth. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which in turn constructs your veneer.
- It usually takes 1-2 weeks for your dentist to receive the veneers back from the laboratory. For very unsightly teeth, temporary dental veneers can be placed for an additional cost.
Bonding
- Before the dental veneer is permanently cemented to your tooth, your dentist will temporarily place it on your tooth to examine its fit and color. He or she will repeatedly remove and trim the veneer as needed to achieve the proper fit; the veneer color can be adjusted with the shade of cement to be used. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched — which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process.
- A special cement is applied to the veneer and the veneer is then placed on your tooth. Once properly position on the tooth, your dentist will apply a special light beam
LUMINEERS
Unlike normal veneers, whereby the cosmetic dentist has to reduce the outer surface of your teeth by 0.5mm to 0.75 mm to create space for the veneer, Lumineers don’t require the tooth to be drilled because of their wafer thin structure. In some cases, tooth contouring may be necessary, but to a lesser extent.
Advantages
- No drill
- No pain

A denture is removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues .two types of dentures are available. Complete dentures and Partial dentures
COMPLETE DENTURES: They are used when all the teeth are missing ,while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are present. These are again of two types CONVENTIONAL and IMMEDIATE. CONVENTIONAL DENTURES are made after teeth have been removed and gum tissue has begun to heal .Usually a conventional denture can be place dafter eight to twelve weeks after tooth is removed. Unlike conventional dentures ,IMMEDIATE DENTURES can be made in advance and be positioned as soon as teeth are removed .hence patient does not has to be without teeth during healing period. However they should be considered as temporary solution.
PARTIAL DENTURES: A removable partial dentures consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum colored plate which is sometimes connected by metal framework.
Important points for Denture wearer
- It can take about one week for every decade old you are to get used to new dentures. It is important not to panic if they feel loose when you first get them- they should tighten up when they settle. Also your mouth learns to control them but this takes time.
- Often they will injure the gums a bit at first,– so if you get an ulcer, this does not mean that you cannot or will not be able to wear them – visit dentist and get them adjusted
- When you first get them talk as much as possible to get used to talking with them in.
- Practice counting from 65 up to 70 as these sounds can be the hardest to get used to. Remember that your tongue and cheeks etc. are suddenly being asked to move in a different way- give them a chance to learn!!
- You should usually take them out at night- but keep them in water. This will help your oral musculature to relax
- It is common for people to salivate more (which can affect speech) when they first get a denture .Eventually it reduces with time and practice.
WESSON TOOTH REMOVAL
A crowded mouth Sometimes dentists extract teeth to prepare the mouth for orthodontics The goal of orthodontics is to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if your teeth are too big for your mouth.
Infection. If tooth decay or damage extends to the pulp and blood vessels — bacteria in the mouth can enter the pulp, leading to infection. If infection is so severe that antibiotics do not cure it, extraction may be needed to prevent the spread of infection.
Risk of infection. If your immune system is compromised (for example, if you are receiving chemotherapy or are having an organ transplant) even the risk of infection in a particular tooth may be reason to remove the tooth.
Gum disease. If periodontal disease — an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth — have caused loosening of the teeth, it may be necessary to extract the tooth or teeth.
Do’s:
- It is normal for the area to be painful for the first few days, and in most cases simple over-the-counter pain relief is enough to ease any discomfort. Take painkillers as prescribed immediately
- Go home, take it easy for the rest of the day, and don’t exercise for at least 12 to 24 hours.
- After initial 24 hours you should gently rinse 4 times a day using warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). after every meal and snack, making sure that the water removes any bits of food around the area where the tooth is missing.
- Avoid brushing near the extraction site for 3 4 days
- Stick to a liquid or soft food diet for the first day or two. Examples include soups, yoghurts, fruit milkshakes, smoothies, mashed potatoes, etc. A Vitamin C supplement may also be helpful. Avoid spicy foods, hot drinks and sodas for 3-4 days, to prevent irritation and burns
- If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics, follow the instructions and make sure you finish the course.
- Extraction of wisdom tooth can be followed sometimes by swelling .. On the day of the surgery, apply ice packs for 15 minutes on then 15 minutes off until bedtime. This will keep swelling to a minimum Moist heat after 36 hours may help jaw soreness.
- After removal of third molars, try to gently open and close your mouth to prevent trismus.
Don’ts:
- Don’t be tempted to rinse the area for 24 hours after tooth removal.
- Avoid hot food or drinks until the numbing wears off. You cannot feel pain while you’re numb and may burn your mouth. Also take care not to accidentally bite your cheek!
- – keep your fingers and tongue away from the site of extraction
- Avoid sucking ,spitting, and blowing your nose (unless you have to). This is because positive or negative pressure could dislodge the blood clot.
- Try not to smoke for as long as possible afterwards, but at the very least for the rest of the day. Smoking can interfere with the healing process, and also the sucking motion could dislodge the blood clot.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, as it could delay the healing process.
CROWNS AND BRIDGES
TYPE OF CROWNS
- METAL-this type of crown can be made of gold alloy Nickel or chromium alloy
- CERAMIC-ceramic crowns look like normal teeth and are ideal for use on the front
- PORCELAIN-fused to metal (PFM)- look like normal and can be used anywhere in the mouth.
PROCEDURE: The dentist reduces the size of teeth on which the crown is placed and an impression is taken which is then sent to dental lab. The dental technician fabricates the crown on the model poured out of impression and sends it back to the dentist .The dentist fixes the crown in the patient’s mouth using special cements. During the period till the crown comes from lab dentist gives a temporary crown bridge to the patient.
